For black folks the “finish line” keeps moving.
Once upon a time, there were whole Black Communities of Color that were totally self-reliant! And since there was an (implied) segregation among Whites and Blacks after the Reconstruction to live “Free” our communities flourished. Buying and selling goods-and-services, or, bartering for a room in exchange for work, became standard practice during the Great Depression and throughout WWII.
Yet, Jim Crow — An imaginary, fictitious Persona that gave Confederates comfort and permission to practice “Institutional Racism” as the New Law of the land, forced us back into socioeconomic poverty. White folks were all too happy to enforce a law that empowered them, blatantly ignoring statutes that were (supposedly) abolished in 1863.
Here it is over 150 years later, and still we are NOT Free! We are still shackled by economic bondage, institutionalized to Fail by the “powers-that-be” that we do Not pass GO, we do not move ahead under the guise of “Reverse Racism”
And like the picture above, “Quit Whining” pretends that we are all equal now since the election of Barack Obama as the First Black President, that we somehow live in a Post-Racial Society when we don’t. We continue to follow all the rules, acquire all of the Education, Certifications and Affiliations required of us to “Qualify” but yet, we’re STILL Denied! To know you qualify for 90% of all available IT jobs on the Internet and have ‘No Problem’ getting interviews except when you show up “Black” for the job, leaves a lot to be desired…
We are No different you and I, except, if I were a different color, I’d have a better quality of life with the same education and skills I have now. I’d be a Homeowner. I’d have Equity Wealth to pass onto my children and grandchildren. I’d have better access to Healthcare based upon my zip-code, as well as my ability to afford the neighborhood I live in, but this is not the case.
I’ve been there since the Birth of Information Technology and made myself indispensable until Outsourcing… Corporations created Outsourcing to increase competition for wages that keeps us ALL Poor! Now that American Labor is the enemy, I don’t care how many degrees you have, there’s someone over in India that’ll do your job, for ½ the price.
And that’s a major problem; forcing people to do “More” with “Less” as if we just have too much disposable income forces Everyone to struggle as a result.
Who’s responsible for this?
The Gridlock, Senatorial & Congressional Obstruction in Washington!
Those who believe Free Enterprise allows for Free Competition, but at what cost? And why do Corporations STILL receive Tax Breaks and Corporate (Welfare) subsidies while hiring overseas?
This is why Republications want MORE Deregulation (Go ahead, Fact Check me)!
In the meantime, this is also why a “National” minimum wage doesn’t work. In Charlotte, NC, you can rent a nice two-bedroom apartment with 1 ½ baths, private parking, gym and a pool for $750-$800/Month. In Brooklyn, NY a two-bedroom apartment with one-bath is $1700-$2300/Month! No parking, No pool, but you may get a gym (maybe). That’s 2 ½-times the rent in Charlotte.
Minimum wage should be in line with the “cost-of-living” per State.
Besides, there are people who can’t afford to leave unless they have “transferable” job skills to secure a place to live, relocation doesn’t work for many just trying to keep their head above water.
Even with a couple both earning $20/Hour or about $35,000/Year ($70K) still couldn’t afford to pay $2000/Month rent in NYC without struggling. It is that struggle that has become so daunting that it’s next to impossible to secure the job(s) necessary to maintain a stable living residence that either keeps you moving, evicted, in a shelter, homeless, in-between jobs, etc., etc.
It is the economy of “Job-Sharing” that hurts us all.
Black folks have always been told, “Be lucky you have a job at all.” In the movie, “Hidden Figures,” Black Married women had to address their White Married co-workers as Mrs., while the Black Women were addressed by their first-name — Just 50 short years ago. Think “Respect” has changed much since then? Do you think Washington simply refused to work with Obama because he was Black?
We are always made to feel “threatened” by our job, like the pendulum swinging over your head in constant worry. We worry more now because the saturation of disposable Guest Workers in the Corporate Workplace is a constant reminder that there’s always someone to take your place, creating job-insecurity!
Today, White people are just as disposable as Black people, (and you were worried about job sharing with us)?
Now I understand why my brothers and sisters have become so angry and bitter. Instead of rising up, challenging the status quo and (believing) we belong, we have retreated into disgust and defeat, tail between our legs; beat down by the weight of Poverty and all of her Nuisances. When you’re denied a job, over and over and over again, simply because there are other choices besides us, it becomes painfully obvious where [we] stand.
I begin to see why people smoke and drink and “Do Drugs” after being unemployed for years. They begin to slip deeper into Depression, abusing pharmaceutical substances to ease their pain. There are more people addicted to opioids [Percocet/Oxytocin and Hydrocodone] than ever before. Now White people have succumbed to using Drugs and Alcohol to ease their pain since Outsourcing pulled White Middle-America right down with us!
Back in the 80s when Crack was first introduced, people who had no reason to abuse drugs couldn’t understand why. Today as job-loss, misery and drug dependency grows, so does America’s addiction to the Needle and White Powder, as they’ve become our “new best friends” to Pacify the Pain of Poverty.
When you remove all hope — Crush it even, with the economic despair of joblessness, it becomes a whole lot easier to drown your sorrows in a bottle, take a Heroin needle, Feel-Good pills, or a Meth-Pipe to escape the pain of Unemployment and all its failures, as the longer you’re without work, the harder it is to become gainfully reemployed…
Challenging society for something more is a luxury we no longer have, since the time spent trying to win the battle of “New Credentials” vs. “Being Broke” with bills, is so daunting that the frustration of “Now” has become our New Normal.
“Chaos theory” — Studies the behavior of dynamic systems that are highly sensitive to initial, inflicting conditions yielding widely diverging outcomes, rendering long-term prediction in general, even though these systems are deterministic; meaning that their future behavior is fully determined by their initial (systemic) conditions, with no “random” elements involved.
Keyword: Random — Meaning without predicted occurrence.
Our economic downfall is anything but “random!”
Today, all American Citizens are suffering economically as a result of the “Chaos Theory” of the 21st Century!
